Imperial Cities - featuring Prague, Vienna, Budapest and the Oberammergau Passion Play

Great sightseeing, traditional entertainment and fabulous cultural elements await you on your amazing tour of the Imperial cities of Central Europe. During a visit to a typical Hungarian horse farm, you’ll learn the unique culture and history of the Hungarian horsemen and watch in amazement as they put on a spectacular horse show. An informative city tour of Budapest features the Mathias Church, where many kings have had their coronations. Travel back in time with a visit to a 14th century castle, where knights with colorful costumes and authentic weaponry recreate the days of chivalry. In the grand city of Vienna, stand in awe of the baroque marvels of Schoenbrunn Palace, the summer retreat of the Habsburg dynasty. “Waltz” across the breathtaking Danube and travel through the historic Wachau Valley during your scenic Danube River cruise. Explore the 11th century Melk Abbey, famous for its production and collection of manuscripts. While in Prague, you’ll see the amazing Hradcany Castle and walk the famous Golden Lane. Your tour concludes with a memorable and moving performance of the Oberammergau Passion Play, whose origins date back to 1634.

The Passion Play, based on the life of Christ, dates from the 17th Century. It was first performed in 1634, following a vow taken by the people of Oberammergau during an outbreak of bubonic plague, which killed 15,000 nearby Munich residents in 1634 – 1635 alone. The frightened population of Oberammergau prayed to be spared, taking a vow to be fulfilled not by a few but by the whole community. They vowed to do something in which everyone, rich and poor alike, would have a part: a Passion Play, the most sacred of all stories. They would present the story of Christ to the world every 10 years forevermore if the Lord would remove the plague from their people. The town was spared, and a tradition was born. The play is now performed at the start of each decade. Since 1860 the German text has remained virtually unchanged. The production is done in native German, but an English translation is available. Though the cast is huge — 1,700 parts — performers must be Oberammergau natives, or have lived there for 10 years, or been married to a native and lived there for at least 10 years. Performers consider it an honor to participate and leave their businesses to do so. The men even start growing full beards a year out to look authentic. The play is performed in the Passion Play Theatre on an open stage, which incorporates the natural setting into the backdrop and seating for 4,780 spectators.

From $5119 per person double occupancy including air from Harrisburg and current air taxes and fuel surcharges (air subject to chnage until paid in full).

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Please call or email for a complete flyer. NOTE: This tour will sell out quickly and far in advance due to the Passion Play only offered every 10 years with limited seating. PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS EARLY - we recommend by August 2008 - 2 years in advance
